AIVA was founded by Pierre Barreau, Denis Shetfan, and Vincent Barreau with the aim of creating an AI music writing assistant that would forever change the landscape of how we, as artists, create music. AIVA is essentially an AI music writing DAW (digital audio workstation) that enables you to select a genre, mood, basic tempo, instrument palette, and duration, and then produces a simple composition within the framework you specified. You can then open the editor to view the MIDI data for each part of the composition, such as the bass, melody, chord progression, etc., and make any further necessary adjustments. Once satisfied with the content AIVA created, you can export the MIDI to your own DAW to continue the music production process.

After playing around with AIVA for a bit, I can definitely see the usefulness of this tool. While the compositions can be rudimentary in nature, depending on your level of music knowledge and production skills, AIVA can be leveraged as a source of inspiration to get the ball rolling. Although I have yet to receive a composition from AIVA that I feel comfortable using for one of my own productions, I do believe that, in time, AIVA will become more mature in its music generation abilities and offer higher quality content.

As AI gains traction in many industries, there is a growing concern in the music industry that AI will render humans useless, or even irrelevant. Although this may be happening rapidly in some industries, I think that in the music industry, it will take more time, if at all. It’s difficult to predict all the forms that AI will take, but for now, AI in the arts industry, especially in music, is still only an assisting tool to be used for inspiration and refinement. In my opinion, nothing can compare to the natural beauty real musicians bring into this world through their music.
