Sonixinema’s Intimate Legato-Cello Review

Warm, Intimate, Captivating

Introducing Intimate Legato: Cello, a solo cello sample library featuring a beautifully captured, natural sounding legato performed by virtuoso cellist, Nicholas Trygstad. With a wonderfully raw and life-like sound, this library makes it easy to create realistic and emotional melodic lines.
Built for the free Kontakt Player, Intimate Legato: Cello was recorded in a small church hall with a variety of microphone positions to capture the detail of the cello and the room. The library features a host of useful controls such as a “Rebowing” keyswitch, legato intensity and legato volume sliders, multiple microphone positions and a host of reverb presets, filters and distortions..

I recently purchased Sonixinema’s Intimate Legato Cello, and I must say, it is by far the best sampled legato cello I have found. This is not to say that there aren’t other incredibly sampled Solo Legato Cello libraries out there. However, the playability of this one is silky smooth and comes with a rebowing keyswitch—an essential feature I wanted out of a solo string library. Hats off to Sonixinema for adding this feature!

The UI for this library is easy to navigate, and it comes with multiple mic positions and individually adjustable features. The universal mic position slider is intelligently mapped, making curated mic positions easily accessible. There are also presets for different mic positions and overall cello sounds that the creators have carefully curated.

On the right-hand side of the UI, you’ll find reverb, delay, three different tape saturation modes to choose from, chorus fx, and standard envelope ADSR. One of the greatest features of the UI is the legato strength and speed. These two adjustable sliders are the secret sauce to making this cello perform the way you need it to based on your composition.

One more aspect of this library that impressed me was the amount of detail captured in the lower register of the cello. Trying to play the lowest C of the cello will seriously blow your mind! I couldn’t believe how rich the sound was. It really sounded like the cello was being played right in front of me. The sound jumped out of the speakers!

It’s important to note that this cello is centered in position. Some libraries come automatically panned in a traditional orchestral position, which works for certain compositions. I enjoy the fact that this one is panned center. It really highlights it as a featured solo instrument. If you need to pan it, you can always do a stereo pan (for Logic Pro users) and shift it to the right, which I have done for some of my compositions that I’ve used it for.
